How We List and Check Dental Practices

By Dr Faiz Azizan Data last checked How we list clinics

This page explains how the 308 practices in this directory were found, checked and dated (data last checked October 2026): what is published, what is left out, and what we never claim.

1. Finding practices

Practices are collected from Google Maps listings across Hertfordshire. Duplicates are merged by Google's place identifier, never by name. Non-dental businesses wrongly filed under dentistry, permanently closed listings and practitioner entries that share a practice's address and phone are removed.

2. Where each fact comes from

  • Google Business Profile: name, address, telephone, website, rating and review count, opening hours and the facilities Google lists (accessibility, parking, payments).
  • The practice's own website: we read the home page and up to seven pages such as about, team, contact and fees, and record only facts the practice itself states: the site's own description, a stated founding year, dentists and clinicians named together with a GDC number, professional bodies or plans it mentions, facilities it mentions (for example parking, step-free access, payment plans), links to its own social profiles and a CQC page it links to.

Every such fact is shown with the page it came from and the date we checked. We do not infer, summarise opinions or copy testimonials, and we do not publish review text.

2b. Official register data (CQC)

Where possible we match each practice to the Care Quality Commission's published care directory (dentist locations), by postcode and telephone number or name. A match shows the CQC location name, provider, ID and the date of the latest CQC check, and links to the CQC record. The directory is published under the Open Government Licence v3.0 (contains public sector information licensed under that licence). A practice with no match may be listed under a different name or address; that does not mean it is unregistered.

3. Location

A practice's town comes from its Google address and is confirmed from its map coordinates, not from which search returned it. Places with only a few practices are folded into the nearest larger town; the profile shows the place name.

4. Quality gates before a page is published

  • The listing must be a dental practice (by Google category).
  • It needs at least three real data items (rating and reviews, hours, facilities, phone, website, or facts stated on its website). Practices with less are held back rather than published thin.
  • Temporarily closed practices are not published.
  • A treatment page exists only where at least five practices in a large enough town state that treatment on their own website, and where those practices are not simply the whole town.

5. What "Top-Rated" means

On pages titled "N Top-Rated Dentists in [Town] Providing [Treatment]", "Top-Rated" is a data threshold: a Google rating of 4.8 or higher from at least 50 Google reviews. The threshold was set so that it separates practices (roughly half of a town's practices for a treatment meet it, not nearly all), and it is shown on every page that uses the wording. It is not an endorsement, a ranking or a clinical assessment. When fewer than three practices meet the threshold the page drops the wording. Practices are always listed A-Z.

6. NHS dentistry

We do not publish whether a practice is taking new NHS patients: that changes weekly and NHS.uk is the authoritative source. We only show which practices mention NHS dentistry on their own websites, labelled as stated by the practice and dated. See NHS dentists in Hertfordshire.

7. What we never publish

No "best dentist" claims, no prices we cannot source, no testimonials or review text, no verified badges, no home addresses or personal mobile numbers, and no emergency dentist availability. For urgent dental problems call NHS 111; in an emergency call 999.

8. Limits and licences

Ratings, hours and facilities are Google's data and may be out of date or incomplete. Statements from practice websites are the practice's own and are not verified. Google shows only some facility categories for some listings, so a missing detail does not mean a practice lacks it. Google figures are shown for identification and comparison, with attribution and a checked date; the CQC directory is used under the Open Government Licence v3.0; practice website facts are the practice's own statements. Any practice can have its listing corrected or removed.

9. Corrections

Practices and practitioners can claim, correct or remove a listing at any time: see claim, correct or remove a listing. Compiled and checked by Dr Faiz Azizan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does Dentist Hertfordshire get its data?
From each practice's Google Business Profile (name, address, phone, rating, review count, opening hours, facilities) and from the practice's own website (treatments, named dentists with GDC numbers, professional bodies, facilities, social links). Each fact links to its source and shows a checked date.
How is a practice assigned to a town?
By the address on its Google Business Profile, with the location confirmed from its map coordinates. Practices in places with too few practices for their own page are listed under the nearest larger town, and the profile says so.
What does "Top-Rated" mean on treatment pages?
A Google rating of 4.8 or higher from at least 50 Google reviews. It is a stated data threshold, not an endorsement, a ranking or a clinical assessment. When fewer than three practices meet it the page drops the wording.
Does the directory verify credentials?
No. Credentials, NHS mentions and treatments are shown as stated by the practice. Check dentists on the GDC online register and practices on the Care Quality Commission website.
How often is the data refreshed?
Data is re-checked on a schedule and every page shows the month it was last checked. Hours and availability change often, so always confirm with the practice.
