NHS dental charges in England: how the three bands work

By Dr Faiz Azizan Data last checked How we list clinics

NHS dental treatment in England is charged in three bands, from a basic check-up to more complex work such as crowns and dentures, plus a separate charge for urgent treatment. Amounts change, so always check the current figures on NHS.uk before treatment rather than relying on a third-party list.

The three bands

Band 1 covers an examination, diagnosis and advice, and may include X-rays and a scale and polish. Band 2 covers everything in Band 1 plus further treatment such as fillings, root canal treatment or extractions. Band 3 covers everything in Bands 1 and 2 plus more complex work such as crowns, dentures and bridges.

Urgent treatment has its own charge. These charges apply in England; Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland set their own.

Where to check the current amounts

Charges are reviewed periodically and this guide deliberately does not repeat figures that go out of date. Use the NHS charges page, and ask the practice for a written treatment plan showing the band before you agree to treatment.

Who does not pay

Some people are entitled to free NHS dental treatment. See the guide on who qualifies, and on help with costs if you are on a low income.

Questions to ask your dentist

  • Which band will my treatment fall into, and can I have that in writing before we start?
  • Is any part of this plan private rather than NHS, and what does each part cost?
  • If my treatment changes during the course, how will the charge change?
  • Am I entitled to free or reduced-cost treatment, and what proof do you need?

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I pay once for each visit or for each treatment?
NHS charges are per course of treatment, by the band of the most complex treatment included. Ask the practice to confirm the band on your treatment plan.
Are private dental charges set by the NHS?
No. Private fees are set by each practice, which is why a written estimate matters.
Where can I compare Hertfordshire dentists for "nhs dental charges in england"?
Start with the largest town pages: Dentists in Watford, Dentists in St Albans, Dentists in Hemel Hempstead, Dentists in Stevenage and Dentists in Bishop's Stortford. Listings are A-Z and based on what each practice states, checked 6 October 2026.
Is the guide "NHS dental charges in England" medical advice?
No. It is general information compiled by Dr Faiz Azizan from official sources such as NHS.uk and the General Dental Council. For advice about your own teeth speak to a registered dentist; for urgent problems call NHS 111.
