Invisalign vs braces: how to choose

By Dr Faiz Azizan Data last checked How we list clinics

Fixed braces are brackets and wires attached to the teeth; clear aligners such as Invisalign are removable trays worn in sequence. Which suits you depends on what needs moving, your age and how reliably you can follow instructions, so ask an orthodontist or dentist to assess you before you commit.

How they differ

Fixed braces stay on throughout treatment and are adjusted by the practice. Clear aligners are removable and worn for most of the day, so success depends on wearing them as directed. Some tooth movements are easier with one system than the other, which is a clinical judgement.

After either treatment a retainer is usually needed to hold the result.

NHS orthodontics

NHS orthodontic treatment is generally available to children and young people where there is a clinical need, assessed against a national index. Adult orthodontics and clear aligners are usually private.

What to ask

Ask who will plan and supervise the treatment, whether they are on the GDC orthodontic specialist list if the practice describes them as a specialist, how long you will wear retainers, and what happens if treatment needs to change.

Questions to ask your dentist

  • Which of these options do you recommend for my teeth, and why?
  • Who will plan and supervise the treatment, and are they a GDC-registered orthodontist if described as a specialist?
  • How long will treatment last, and how long will I need a retainer afterwards?
  • What happens if my teeth do not move as planned, or if I lose an aligner or a bracket breaks?
  • What does the quote include (check-ups, retainers, refinements)?
