Can't afford a dentist? Help with dental costs in England
By Dr Faiz Azizan Data last checked How we list clinics
If you cannot afford dental treatment in England, you may be entitled to free NHS care or help through the NHS Low Income Scheme. Ask practices about payment plans for private work, always get costs in writing, and call NHS 111 for urgent pain rather than delaying care.
NHS routes
Check whether you already qualify for free NHS treatment. If you are on a low income, the NHS Low Income Scheme can provide full or partial help; a certificate is issued by the NHS and shown to the practice.
Practice payment options
Some practices offer payment plans or spread the cost of private treatment. Ask for the terms in writing and compare them with the NHS option for the same clinical need.
Do not delay urgent care
Severe pain, swelling or an injury needs prompt attention. NHS 111 can direct you to urgent dental care.
Questions to ask your dentist
- Can you give me a written estimate with each option priced separately?
- Do you offer a payment plan, and what are the terms if I miss a payment?
- Is there an NHS option for the same clinical need, and what would it cost?
- What should I do first if the problem is painful but I cannot pay everything now?
