Dentures: types, fit and care
By Dr Faiz Azizan Data last checked How we list clinics
Dentures replace missing teeth and can be full or partial. They are made to fit your mouth and may need adjustment while you get used to them. On the NHS they fall within Band 3 charges. Clean them daily, remove them at night as advised and see your dentist if they stop fitting.
Types
Full dentures replace all the teeth in an arch and partial dentures replace some, attached to the remaining teeth. Some people choose implant-supported options, which are usually private.
Getting used to them
It can take time to speak and eat comfortably. Sore spots are common at first and the practice can adjust the fit, so return rather than ignore them.
Care
Clean dentures every day with a suitable brush and cleaner, handle them over a basin of water, and follow your dentist's advice about wearing them at night. Mouths change over time, so keep going for check-ups.
Questions to ask your dentist
- What type of denture do you recommend for me and what are the alternatives?
- How many visits will it take, and what adjustments are included?
- How should I clean and store them, and should I wear them at night?
- Who makes the denture, and are they GDC-registered?
