Dental implants: questions to ask before treatment
By Dr Faiz Azizan Data last checked How we list clinics
A dental implant is a small post placed in the jawbone to support a crown, bridge or denture. Suitability depends on healthy gums and enough bone, and treatment usually takes place in stages. Ask who will plan and place the implant, how follow-up works and what happens if it fails.
What an implant is
An implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. A crown, bridge or denture is attached once the implant has bonded with the bone. The process is usually staged and can take several months.
Who is it suitable for
Dentists assess gum health, bone volume, general health and habits such as smoking. NHS implants are available only in limited clinical circumstances, so most implant treatment is private.
Questions to ask
Ask who will plan and place the implant and what their training and implant experience are, what alternatives exist, how follow-up is handled, and what the written plan says about complications and costs.
Questions to ask your dentist
- Who will plan and place my implant, and how many have they placed?
- Do I have enough bone and healthy gums, or would I need extra procedures first?
- What are the alternatives, such as a bridge or denture, and how do they compare for me?
- How is aftercare and follow-up handled, and what happens if an implant fails?
- What is the full written plan and cost, including the crown?
